STARTING AND OPERATING
shifts, and the best fuel econom y. Select the “3” range
when frequ ent transm ission shifting occurs when using
the Overd rive range, such as when operating the vehicle
und er heavy load ing cond itions (in hilly terrain, travel-
ing into strong head wind s, or while tow ing heavy
trailers.
“3” (Third)
This range eliminates shifts into Overd rive. The transm is-
sion will operate norm ally in First, Second and Third
while in this range. The “3” position shou ld also be used
when descend ing steep grad es to prevent brake system
distress.
NOTE:
NOTE: Using the “3” range while operating the vehicle
und er heavy operating cond itions will improve perfor-
mance and extend transm ission life by red ucing exces-
sive shifting and heat build up.
•
If the vehicle is started in cold tem peratu res, shifts into
Overd rive may be delayed . Norm al Overd rive and
shifting operation will resu me when the tem peratu re
of the transm ission reaches the approp riate tem pera-
ture. Refer to the “Note” und er “Torqu e Converter
Clutch” later in this section.
“L” (Low)
This range shou ld be used for engine braking when
descend ing very steep grad es. In this range, upshifts will
occur only to prevent engine oversp eed while downshifts
occur earlier than other gear range selections.
•
If the transm ission tem peratu re gets too hot, the
transm ission may downshift out of Overd rive or en-
gage overd rive at higher vehicle speed s until the
transm ission cools down. After coold own, Overd rive
will resu me norm al operation.
