STARTING AND OPERATING

NOTE:
CAUTIO N!
The torqu  e converter  clutch  will  not  engage  until  the
transm ission  fluid  and   engine  coolant  is  warm  (usu-
ally  after  1–3 miles  [1.6–4.8 km]  of  driving).  Because
engine   speed   is  higher   when   the  torqu e  converter
clutch  is not  engaged , it  may  seem as  if the  transm is-
sion is not  shifting  into “Overd rive”  when  cold. This is
consid ered  a  norm al  cond ition.  Pulling   the   selector
lever into  the “3”  position  will show  that the  transm is-
sion  is able  to shift  into and  out  of  “Overd rive.”
Never   race  the  engin e  with   the  brak es  on  and   the
veh icle  in  gear,  and   never   hold   the  veh icle  on  an
inclin e with  out applyin  g the  brak es.  These  practices
can
cause     overh eatin g    and     damage
to
the
tran smission  .

Torque  Con verter  Clu tch
A featu re  designed   to  improve   fuel  econom y has  been
added   to  the  autom atic  transm ission  of  this  vehicle.  A
clutch  within  the torqu e converter  engages   autom atically
at calibrated   speed s. This  may  resu lt in a  slightly  differ-
ent  feeling or  resp onse during   norm al operation   in  high
gear.  When  the vehicle  speed  drop  s, or during   accelera-
tion,  the clutch  autom  atically and  smoothly   disengages.
If the vehicle  has  not been  driven  for several  days,  the
first  few second s of  operation  after  shifting  the  trans-
mission  into gear  may seem  sluggish.  This is due to the
transm ission  fluid  partially   draining   from  the  torqu e
converter   into  the  transm ission.  This  is consid ered   a
norm al cond ition  and  it will  not cause  damage   to the
transm ission.  The torqu e  converter  will  refill within   5
second s of shifting  from “P”  (Park) into  any other  gear
position.
