brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and exces-
sive swelling suggest deterioration of the rubber. Particu -
lar attention shou ld be made to exam ining those hose
surfaces nearest to high heat sou rces, such as the exhau st
manifold .
NOTE: Insp ection of brake hoses shou ld be done when-
ever the brake system is serviced and at every engine oil
change.
WARN ING!
Insp ect all hose clamps and couplings to make sure they
are secure and no leaks are present.
Worn brak e hoses can burst and cause brak e failu re.
You could have an accid ent. If you see any sign s of
crack ing, scuffin g, or worn spots, have the brak e
hoses rep laced immediately.
Insu re nylon tubing in these areas has not melted or
collap sed .
NOTE: Often, fluids such as oil, power steering fluid,
and brake fluid are used during assem bly plant opera-
tions to ease the assem bly of hoses to couplings. There-
fore, oil wetness at the hose-cou pling area is not neces-
sarily an ind ication of leakage. Actu al dripping of hot
fluid when system s are und er pressu re (during vehicle
operation) shou ld be noted before a hose is rep laced
based on leakage.
Brak e Master Cylin der
7
The fluid level in the master cylind er shou ld be checked
when perform ing und er hood services, or immediately if
the brake system warning lamp is on.
Be sure to clean the top of the master cylind er area before
rem oving the cap. If necessary, add fluid to bring the
fluid level up to the requ irem ents described on the brake
