The traction grad e is based on brak ing (straigh t-
ahead ) traction tests and does not include corn erin g
(turning) perform ance.
The tem peratu re grad e is estab lish ed for a tire that is
prop erly inflated and not overload ed. Excessive
speed , underin flation , or excessive load ing, eith er
sep arately or in combination , can cause heat build up
and possib le tire failu re.
Temperature Grades
The tem peratu re grad es are A (highest), B, and C, rep re-
senting the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and
its ability to dissip ate heat when tested und er controlled
cond itions on a specified ind oor laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high tem peratu re can cause the material of the
tire to degenerate and red uce tire life, and excessive
tem peratu re can lead to sudden tire failu re. The grad e C
corresp ond s to a level of perform ance which all passen-
ger car tires must meet und er the Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Stand ard No. 109. Grad es B and A rep resent
higher levels of perform ance on the laboratory test wheel
than the minim um requ ired by law.
