Yourvehicleisequippedwithacomputerthat
monitorstheengine’semissioncontrolsystem.This
systemiscommonlyknownastheOnBoard
DiagnosticsSystem(OBD-II).ThisOBD-IIsystem
protectstheenvironmentbyensuringthatyour
vehiclecontinuestomeetgovernmentemission
standards.TheOBD-IIsystemalsoassiststhe
servicetechnicianinproperlyservicingyourvehicle.
WhentheCheckEngine/ServiceEngineSoonlight
illuminates,theOBD-IIsystemhasdetecteda
malfunction.Temporarymalfunctionsmaycause
yourCheckEngine/ServiceEngineSoonlightto
illuminate.Examplesare:

Thevehiclehasrunoutoffuel.(Theenginemay
misfireorrunpoorly.)

Poorfuelqualityorwaterinthefuel.
Thefuelcapmaynothavebeensecurely
tightened.
Thesetemporarymalfunctionscanbecorrectedby
fillingthefueltankwithgoodqualityfueland/or
properlytighteningthefuelcap.Afterthreedriving
cycleswithouttheseoranyothertemporary
malfunctionspresent,theCheckEngine/Service
EngineSoonlightshouldturnoff.(Adrivingcycle
consistsofacoldenginestartupfollowedbymixed
city/highwaydriving.)Noadditionalvehicleserviceis
required.
IftheCheckEngine/ServiceEngineSoonlight
remainson,haveyourvehicleservicedatthefirst
availableopportunity.
