course.Forexample,atiregraded150wouldwear
oneandone-half(11/2)timesaswellonthe
governmentcourseasatiregraded100.Therelative
performanceoftiresdependsupontheactual
conditionsoftheiruse,however,andmaydepart
significantlyfromthenormduetovariationsin
drivinghabits,servicepractices,anddifferencesin
roadcharacteristicsandclimate.
Traction AA A B C
Thetractiongrades,fromhighesttolowestareAA,
A,B,andC.Thegradesrepresentthetire’sabilityto
stoponwetpavementasmeasuredundercontrolled
conditionsonspecifiedgovernmenttestsurfacesof
asphaltandconcrete.AtiremarkedCmayhave
poortractionperformance.
Thetractiongradeassignedtothistireis
basedonstraight-aheadbrakingtraction
tests,anddoesnotincludeacceleration,cornering,
hydroplaningorpeaktractioncharacteristics.
Temperature A B C
ThetemperaturegradesareA(thehighest),Band
C,representingthetire’sresistancetothe
generationofheatanditsabilitytodissipateheat
whentestedundercontrolledconditionsona
specifiedindoorlaboratorytestwheel.Sustained
hightemperaturecancausethematerialofthetire
todegenerateandreducetirelife,andexcessive
temperaturecanleadtosuddentirefailure.The
gradeCcorrespondstoalevelofperformancewhich
allpassengercartiresmustmeetundertheFederal
MotorVehicleSafetyStandardNo.109.GradesB
andArepresenthigherlevelsofperformanceonthe
laboratorytestwheelthantheminimumrequiredby
law.
