aredesignedtoinflateinfrontalandnear-frontal
collisions,notrollover,side-impact,orrear-impacts
unlessthecollisioncausessufficientlongitudinal
deceleration.
Theairbagsinflateand
deflaterapidlyupon
activation.Afterairbag
deployment,itis
normaltonoticea
smoke-like,powdery
residueorsmellthe
burntpropellant.This
mayconsistof
cornstarch,talcum
powderorsodium
compoundswhichmay
irritatetheskinandeyes,butnoneoftheresidueis
toxic.
WhiletheSRSisdesignedtohelpreduceserious
injuries,contactwithadeployingairbagmayalso
causeabrasions,swellingortemporaryhearingloss.
Becauseairbagsmustinflaterapidlyandwith
considerableforce,thereistheriskofdeathor
seriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeye
injuriesorinternalinjuries,particularlytooccupants
whoarenotproperlyrestrainedorareotherwiseout
