Toobtainanaccuratefluidcheck,drivethevehicle
untilitisatnormaloperatingtemperature
(approximately30km[20miles]).Ifyourvehiclehas
beenoperatedforanextendedperiodathigh
speeds,incitytrafficduringhotweatherorpullinga
trailer,thevehicleshouldbeturnedoffforabout30
minutestoallowfluidtocoolbeforechecking.

Drivethevehicle30km(20miles)oruntilit
reachesnormaloperatingtemperature.
2.
Parkthevehicleonalevelsurfaceandengagethe
parkingbrake.
3.
Withtheparkingbrakeengagedandyourfooton
thebrakepedal,starttheengineandmovethe
gearshiftleverthroughallofthegearranges.Allow
sufficienttimeforeachgeartoengage.
4.
LatchthegearshiftleverinP(Park)andleavethe
enginerunning.
5.
Removethedipstick,wipingitcleanwithaclean,
drylintfreerag.Ifnecessary,refertoIdentifying
componentsintheenginecompartmentinthis
chapterforthelocationofthedipstick.
6.
Installthedipstickmakingsureitisfullyseatedin
thefillertube.
7.
Removethedipstickandinspectthefluidlevel.
Thefluidshouldbeinthedesignatedareafor
normaloperatingtemperatureorambient
temperature.
Lowfluidlevel
Donotdrivethe
vehicleifthefluidlevel
isatthebottomofthe
dipstickandtheambienttemperatureisabove10°C
(50°F).
Correctfluidlevel
Thetransmissionfluidshouldbecheckedatnormal
operatingtemperature66°C-77°C(150°F-170°F)on
alevelsurface.Thenormaloperatingtemperature
canbereachedafterapproximately30km(20
miles)ofdriving.
