Common Towing Definitions
GrossCombinationWeightRating(GCWR)
The follow ing trailer tow ing related definitions will assist
you in und erstand ing the follow ing inform ation:
The gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is the total
perm issible weight of you r vehicle and trailer when
weighed in combination. (Note that GCWR ratings in-
clude a 150 lbs (68 kg) allow ance for the presence of a
driver).
GrossVehicleWeightRating(GVWR)
The GVWR is the total allow able weight of you r vehicle.
This inclu des driver, passengers, cargo and tongu e
weight. The total load must be limited so that you do not
exceed the GVWR.
GrossAxleWeightRating(GAWR)
The GAWR is the maxim um capacity of the front and rear
axles. Distribu te the load over the front and rear axles
evenly. Make sure that you do not exceed either front or
rear GAWR.

GrossTrailerWeight(GTW)
The gross trailer weight (GTW) is the weight of the trailer
plus the weight of all cargo, consu mables and equ ipment
(perm anent or tem porary) load ed in or on the trailer in its
Љload ed and read y for operationЉ cond ition. The recom -
mend ed way to measu re GTW is to put you r fully load ed
trailer on a vehicle scale. The entire weight of the trailer
must be supported by the scale.
