Overdrive (O/D)
For most city and highw ay driving. The transm ission
contains an electronically controlled Overd rive, and will
autom atically shift from D (Drive) to O/ D (Overd rive) if
the follow ing cond itions are present:
•
•
•
The transm ission selector is in D (Drive).
The O/ D OFF switch has not been activated .
Vehicle speed is above approxim ately 30 mph (48
km/ h).
5
•
Transm ission has reached norm al operating tem pera-
ture.
Overd rive can be locked out by pressing the O/ D OFF
switch located on side of the gearshift lever. The O/ D
OFF ind icator light will illuminate to show that the
switch has been activated . When the ind icator light is on,
Overd rive is locked out. Pressing the switch a second
time restores the Overd rive function. The lockou t featu re
is useful when tow ing a trailer or carrying a heavy load .
When frequ ent transm ission shifting occurs while using
Overd rive, such as when operating the vehicle und er
heavy load cond itions (for exam ple, in hilly terrain,
strong head wind s, or trailer tow ing), turning off over-
drive will improve perform ance and extend transm ission
life by red ucing excessive shifting and heat buildup.
