Seat Belt Pretensioners
WARN ING!
The driver and front passenger seat belts are equ ipped
with a pretensioning device that is designed to rem ove
any slack from the seat belt system s in the event of a 2
collision. This device improves the perform ance of the
seat belt by assu ring that the belt is tight arou nd the
occupant early in a collision. Pretensioners work for all
size occupants, inclu ding those in child restraints.
•
After a veh icle collision , the driver and fron t
passen ger outboard seat belt system must be
checked by a qualified tech nician to verify that
the “au tom atic lock ing retractor” featu re for child
seats is still function ing prop erly. In addition , all
seat belts should be checked for prop er function .
•
•
The belt and retractor assem bly must be rep laced
if the seat belt assem bly “au tom atic lock ing re-
tractor” featu re or any oth er seat belt function is
not work ing prop erly when checked accord ing to
the proced ures in the Service Manual.
NOTE: These devices are not a substitu te for prop er seat
belt placem ent by the occupant. The seat belt must still be
worn snu gly and positioned prop erly.
The pretensioners are triggered by the front Airbag
Control Mod ule. Like the front airbags, the pretensioners
are a single use item . After a collision that is severe
enou gh to deploy the airbags and pretensioners, they
must be rep laced .
Failu re to rep lace the belt and retractor assem bly
could increase the risk of injury in collision s.
