The ORC monitors the read iness of the electronic parts
of the system whenever the ignition switch is in the
START or RUN positions. These inclu de all of the
item s listed above excep t the steering wheel and
column, and knee bolsters. If the key is in the OFF
position, in the ACC position, or not in the ignition,
the airbags are not on and will not inflate.
WARN ING!
Ign orin g the AIRBAG warn ing ligh t in you r instru -
ment panel could mean you won’t have the airb ags
to protect you in a collision . If the ligh t does not
come on, stays on after you start the veh icle, or if it
comes on as you drive, have the airb ag system
checked righ t away.
Also, the ORC turns on the AIRBAG warning light and
PAD ind icator light in the instru ment panel for 6 to 8
second s for a self-check when the ignition is first turned
on. After the self-check, the AIRBAG warning light will
turn off. The PAD ind icator light will function norm ally
(Refer to “Passenger Airbag Disable (PAD) Ind icator
Light” in this section). If the ORC detects a malfunction
in any part of the system , it turns on the AIRBAG

The Occupant Classification System (OCS) will clas-
sify an occupant into a size category based on sensor
read ings from within the seat cushion. Occupants
shou ld try to rem ain in a norm ally seated position. If
the occupant’s weight is transferred to another object
in the vehicle (i.e. feet on the dashboard ), the OCS may
