how ever, any seat belt system will loosen with time, so
check the belt occasionally and pull it tight if necessary.
If the seat belt has a autom atic locking retractor, it will 2
have a distinctive label. Pull the belt from the retractor
until there is enou gh to allow you to pass throu gh the
child restraint and slide the latch plate into the buckle.
Then, pull the belt until it is all extracted from the
retractor. Allow the belt to retu rn to the retractor, pulling
on the excess webbing to tighten the lap portion abou t
the child restraint. Refer to “Au tom atic Locking Mod e”
earlier in this section.
WARN ING!
Improp er installation of a child restrain t to the
LATCH anchorages can lead to failu re of an infan t or
child restrain t. The child could be badly injured or
killed . Follow the manufactu rer’s direction s exactly
when installin g an infan t or child restrain t.
Installin g Child Restrain ts Usin g the Vehicle Seat
Belt
In the rear seat, you may have trou ble tightening the
lap/ shou lder belt on the child restraint becau se the
buckle or latch plate is too close to the belt path opening
on the restraint. Disconnect the latch plate from the
buckle and twist the short buckle-end belt several times
to shorten it. Insert the latch plate into the buckle with the
release button facing out.
The passenger seat belts are equ ipped with either cinch-
ing latch plates or autom atic locking retractors, which are
designed to keep the lap portion tight arou nd the child
restraint so that it is not necessary to use a locking clip. If
the seat belt has a cinching latch plate, pulling up on the
shou lder portion of the lap/ shou lder belt will tighten the
