Thefactthatthepretensionersorairbagsdidnotactivateforbothfront
seatoccupantsinacollisiondoesnotmeanthatsomethingiswrongwith
thesystem.Rather,itmeansthePersonalSafetySystem™determined
theaccidentconditions(crashseverity,beltusage,etc.)werenot
appropriatetoactivatethesesafetydevices.Frontairbagsaredesigned
toactivateonlyinfrontalandnear-frontalcollisions,notrollovers,
side-impacts,orrear-impactsunlessthecollisioncausessufficient
longitudinaldeceleration.
Driverandpassengerdual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraints
Thedual-stageairbagsofferthecapabilitytotailorthelevelofairbag
inflationenergy.Alower,lessforcefulenergylevelisprovidedformore
common,moderate-severityimpacts.Ahigherenergylevelisusedfor
themostsevereimpacts.RefertoAirbagSupplementalRestraints
(SRS)sectioninthischapter.
Frontcrashseveritysensor
Thefrontcrashseveritysensorenhancestheabilitytodetectthe
severityofanimpact.Positionedupfront,itprovidesvaluable
informationearlyinthecrasheventontheseverityoftheimpact.This
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystem™todistinguishbetweendifferent
levelsofcrashseverityandmodifythedeploymentstrategyofthe
dual-stageairbagsandsafetybeltpretensioners.
Driver’sseatpositionsensor
Thedriver’sseatpositionsensorallowsyourPersonalSafetySystem™to
tailorthedeploymentlevelofthedriverdual-stageairbagbasedonseat
position.Thesystemisdesignedtohelpprotectsmallerdriverssitting
closetothedriverairbagbyprovidingalowerairbagoutputlevel.
Frontpassengersensingsystem
Forairbagstodotheirjobtheymustinflatewithgreatforce,andthis
forcecanposeapotentiallydeadlyrisktooccupantsthatareveryclose
totheairbagwhenitbeginstoinflate.Forsomeoccupants,thisoccurs
becausetheyareinitiallysittingveryclosetotheairbag.Forother
occupants,thisoccurswhentheoccupantisnotproperlyrestrainedby
safetybeltsorchildsafetyseatsandtheymoveforwardduringpre-crash
braking.Themosteffectivewaytoreducetheriskofunnecessary
injuriesistomakesurealloccupantsareproperlyrestrained.Accident
statisticssuggestthatchildrenaremuchsaferwhenproperlyrestrained
intherearseatingpositionsthaninthefront.
