diagnostics(OBD-II)descriptioninthischapter.
Ifthevehicle’sengineortransmissionhasjustbeenserviced,orthe
batteryhasrecentlyrundownorbeenreplaced,theOBD-IIsystemmay
indicatethatthevehicleisnotreadyforI/Mtesting.Todetermineifthe
vehicleisreadyforI/Mtesting,turntheignitionkeytotheONposition
for15secondswithoutcrankingtheengine.IftheServiceengine
soon
indicatorblinkseighttimes,itmeansthatthevehicleisnot
readyforI/Mtesting;iftheServiceenginesoon
indicatorstayson
solid,itmeansthatthevehicleisreadyforI/Mtesting.
TheOBD-IIsystemisdesignedtochecktheemissioncontrolsystem
duringnormaldriving.Acompletecheckmaytakeseveraldays.Ifthe
vehicleisnotreadyforI/Mtesting,thefollowingdrivingcycleconsisting
ofmixedcityandhighwaydrivingmaybeperformed:

minutesofsteadydrivingonanexpressway/highwayfollowedby20
minutesofstop-and-godrivingwithatleastfour30-secondidleperiods.
Allowthevehicletositforatleasteighthourswithoutstartingthe
engine.Then,starttheengineandcompletetheabovedrivingcycle.The
enginemustwarmuptoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.Oncestarted,
donotturnofftheengineuntiltheabovedrivingcycleiscomplete.If
thevehicleisstillnotreadyforI/Mtesting,theabovedrivingcyclewill
havetoberepeated.
