Howdoesthesideaircurtainsystemwork?
Thedesignanddevelopmentofthe
sideaircurtainsystemincluded
recommendedtestingprocedures
thatweredevelopedbyagroupof
automotivesafetyexpertsknownas
theSideAirbagTechnicalWorking
Group.Theserecommendedtesting
procedureshelpreducetheriskof
injuriesrelatedtothedeploymentof
sideairbags(includingsideair
curtainsystems).
Thesideaircurtainsystemconsists
ofthefollowing:
Aninflatablecurtainwithagas
generatorconcealedbehindthe
headlinerandabovethedoors.
Theheadlinerwillflextoopen
abovethesidedoorstoallowair
curtaindeployment.
Thesamewarninglight,electroniccontrolanddiagnosticunitasused
forthefrontairbags.
Twopressuresensorslocatedinthefrontdoors.
Twocrashsensorslocatedontherockerpanelbetweenthe“C”pillar.
Sideaircurtainsandsideairbags,incombinationwithsafetybelts,can
helpreducetheriskofsevereinjuriesintheeventofasignificantside
impactcollision.
Children12yearsoldandundershouldalwaysbeproperlyrestrainedin
therearseats.Thesideaircurtainwillnotinterferewithchildren
restrainedusingaproperlyinstalledchildorboosterseatbecauseitis
designedtoinflatedownwardfromtheheadlinerabovethedoorsalong
thesidewindowopenings.
Thesideaircurtainsaremountedtothesheetmetalabovethefirstand
secondrowseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theaircurtainand
seat-mountedsideairbagonthesideaffectedbythecollisionwillbe
inflated,exceptthatthepassengersensingsystemwilldeactivatethe
passengerseat-mountedsideairbagifitdetectsanemptyunbuckled
passengerseat.Theaircurtainwasdesignedtoinflatebetweentheside
windowareaandoccupanttofurtherenhancetheheadprotection
