areaofthetrail.Avoidreducingthetirepressuresbutshifttoalower
gearanddrivesteadilythroughtheterrain.Applytheacceleratorslowly
andavoidspinningthewheels.
Whendrivingatslowspeedsindeepsandunderhighoutside
temperatures,usealowgearwhenpossible.Lowergearoperationwill
maximizetheengineandtransmissioncoolingcapability.
Undersevereoperatingconditions,theA/Cmaycycleonandoffto
protectoverheatingoftheengine.
Avoidexcessivespeedbecausevehiclemomentumcanworkagainstyou
andcausethevehicletobecomestucktothepointthatassistancemay
berequiredfromanothervehicle.Remember,youmaybeabletoback
outthewayyoucameifyouproceedwithcaution.
Mudandwater
Ifyoumustdrivethroughhighwater,driveslowly.Tractionorbrake
capabilitymaybelimited.
Whendrivingthroughwater,determinethedepth;avoidwaterhigher
thanthebottomofthewheelrims(ifpossible)andproceedslowly.Ifthe
ignitionsystemgetswet,thevehiclemaystall.
Oncethroughwater,alwaystrythebrakes.Wetbrakesdonotstopthe
vehicleaseffectivelyasdrybrakes.Dryingcanbeimprovedbymoving
yourvehicleslowlywhileapplyinglightpressureonthebrakepedal.
Becautiousofsuddenchangesinvehiclespeedordirectionwhenyou
aredrivinginmud.EvenAWDvehiclescanlosetractioninslickmud.As
whenyouaredrivingoversand,applytheacceleratorslowlyandavoid
spinningyourwheels.Ifthevehicledoesslide,steerinthedirectionof
theslideuntilyouregaincontrolofthevehicle.
Iftheengine,transmission,AWDsystemcomponentsoraxlesaresubmerged
inwater,theirfluidsshouldbecheckedandchanged,ifnecessary.
Drivingthroughdeepwatermaydamagetheengineor
transmission.
Ifthefrontorrearaxleissubmergedinwater,theaxlelubricantand
PTU(PowerTransferUnit)lubricantshouldbecheckedandchangedif
necessary.
Afterdrivingthroughmud,cleanoffresiduestucktorotatingdriveshafts
andtires.Excessmudstuckontiresandrotatingdriveshaftscausesan
imbalancethatcoulddamagedrivecomponents.
