Check the fluid level while the transm ission is at norm al
operating tem peratu re 180° F (82° C). This occurs after at
least 15 mi (25 km) of driving. At norm al operating
tem peratu re the fluid cannot be held comfortably be-
tween the fingertip s.
6. Remove the dipstick again and note the fluid level on
both sides. The fluid level shou ld be betw een the HOT
(upper) reference holes on the dipstick at norm al operat-
ing tem peratu re. Verify that a solid coating of oil is seen
on both sides of the dipstick. If the fluid is low, add as
requ ired into the dipstick tube. Do not overfill. After
adding any quantity of oil throu gh the dipstick tube, wait
a minim um of two (2) minu tes for the oil to fully drain
into the transm ission before rechecking the fluid level.
To prop erly check the autom atic transm ission fluid level,
the follow ing proced ure must be used :

Operate the engine at idle speed and norm al operating
tem peratu re.
NOTE: If it is necessary to check the transm ission below
the operating tem peratu re, the fluid level shou ld be
betw een the two cold (lower) holes on the dipstick with
the fluid at approxim ately 70° F (21° C) (room tem pera-
ture). If the fluid level is correctly established at room
tem peratu re, it shou ld be betw een the HOT (upper)
reference holes when the transm ission reaches 180° F (21°
C). Remember it is best to check the level at the norm al
operating tem peratu re.

The vehicle must be on level grou nd .
Fully apply parking brake.

Place the gear selector momentarily in each gear
position end ing with the lever in P (Park).
Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until
seated .
