How does the airbag supplemental restraint system work?

activatewhenthevehiclesustains
longitudinaldecelerationsufficient
tocausethesensorstoclosean
electricalcircuitthatinitiatesairbag
inflation.Thefactthattheairbags
didnotinflateinacollisiondoesnot
meanthatsomethingiswrongwith
thesystem.Rather,itmeansthe
forceswerenotofthetype
sufficienttocauseactivation.Front
airbagsaredesignedtoinflatein
frontalandnear-frontalcollisions,notrollover,side-impact,or
rear-impactsunlessthecollisioncausessufficientlongitudinal
deceleration.
Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhichmayirritatetheskinandeyes,butnone
oftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelpreduceseriousinjuries,contact
withadeployingairbagmayalsocauseabrasionsorswelling.Temporary
hearinglossisalsoapossibilityasaresultofthenoiseassociatedwitha
deployingairbag.Becauseairbagsmustinflaterapidlyandwith
considerableforce,thereistheriskofdeathorseriousinjuriessuchas
fractures,facialandeyeinjuriesorinternalinjuries,particularlyto
occupantswhoarenotproperlyrestrainedorareotherwiseoutof
positionatthetimeofairbagdeployment.Thus,itisextremely
importantthatoccupantsbeproperlyrestrainedasfarawayfromthe
airbagmoduleaspossiblewhilemaintainingvehiclecontrol.
