Removeremainingslackfromthe
belt.Forcetheseatdownwithextra
weight,e.g.,bypressingdownor
kneelingonthechildrestraintwhile
pullingupontheshoulderbeltin
ordertoforceslackfromthebelt.
Thisisnecessarytoremovethe
remainingslackthatwillexistonce
theadditionalweightofthechildis
addedtothechildrestraint.Italso
helpstoachievetheproper
snugnessofthechildseattothe
vehicle.Sometimes,aslightlean
towardsthebucklewilladditionally
helptoremoveremainingslackfromthebelt.

Attachthetetherstrap(ifthechildseatisequipped).Referto
Attachingchildsafetyseatswithtetherstrapslaterinthischapter.

Beforeplacingthechildinthe
seat,forciblymovetheseatforward
andbacktomakesuretheseatis
securelyheldinplace.Tocheck
this,grabtheseatatthebeltpath
andattempttomoveitsidetoside
andforwardandback.Thereshould
benomorethan1inch(2.5cm)of
movementforproperinstallation.
FordrecommendscheckingwithaNHTSACertifiedChildPassenger
SafetyTechnician(CPST)tomakecertainthechildrestraintisproperly
installed.InCanada,checkwithyourlocalSt.JohnAmbulanceofficefor
referraltoaCPST.
Attaching child safety seats  with LATCH (Lower Anchors and

TheLATCHsystemiscomposedofthreevehicleanchorpoints:two(2)
loweranchorslocatedwherethevehicleseatbackandseatcushionmeet
(calledthe“seatbight”)andone(1)toptetheranchorlocatedbehind
thatseatingposition.
