free,sotopping-upisnotpossible.Onthetop
ofthebatterythereisabatterycondition
indicator(arrowedinillustration).Examinethe
indicatorperiodicallytocheckthebattery’s
condition.Whentheindicatorshows:

Intemperateclimateschecktheelectrolyte
levelonceevery3years.Inhotclimates
checkthelevelannually.

Occasionallywipethebatterycasingto
removedirtandgrease.

GREEN-thebatteryisinagoodstateof
charge.
Keepthebatteryterminalscleanandfree
fromcorrosionbyoccasionallysmearing
themwithpetroleumjelly.
DARK(turningtoblack)-thebattery
needscharging.
CLEAR(orlightyellow)-thebatterymust
bereplaced.Donotchargethebatteryor
jumpstartthevehicleinthiscondition.
Checkingtheelectrolytelevel
Gentlypriseofftheventcovers(orunscrewif
ventplugsarefitted)andinspectthe
electrolytelevelofthecentrecell.Thisshould
benolowerthan1mm(0.04in)abovethe
topoftheplates.Ifnecessary,topupwith
distilledwatertoamaximumof3mm(0.12
in)abovetheplates.

Ifthegreendotismissing,thebattery
needscharging.
NOTE: When checking the batterycondition
indicator, if necessary, clean the batterytop to
ensure a clear view. Use a torch if naturallight
is poor.
If the indicator shows clear or yellow, tap the
indicator with the handle of a screwdriver to
disperse any air bubbles. If the indicator
colour is unchanged, the batterymust be
replaced.
