SteepclimbswillusuallyrequiretheLOWgear
range.Ifthesurfaceislooseorslippery,use
sufficientspeedinthehighestpracticalgear
totakeadvantageofthevehicle’smomentum.
However,toohighaspeedoverabumpy
surfacemayresultinawheellifting,causing
vehiclesnotfittedwithTractioncontroltolose
traction.Inthiscasetryaslowerapproach.
Tractioncanalsobeimprovedbyeasingoff
theacceleratorjustbeforelossofforward
motion.
Whenthevehicleisbackonlevelgroundor
wheretractioncanberegained,afaster
approachwillprobablyenablethehilltobe
climbed.However,DONOTtakeunnecessary
risks,ifthehillistoodifficulttoclimb,findan
alternativeroute.
WARNING
The engine must be restarted before
reversing down the slope, as there will be
no servo assistance to the brakes unless the
engine is running.
Ifthevehicleisunabletocompleteaclimb,do
notattempttoturnitaroundwhileonthe
slope.Instead,adoptthefollowingprocedure
toreversedownhilltothefootoftheslope:

Holdthevehiclestationaryusingbothfoot
andhandbrakes.

Restarttheengineifnecessary.
EngagereversegearLOWrange.
Releasethehandbrake.Thenreleasethe
footbrakeandclutchsimultaneously,and
allowthevehicletoreversedownthe
slopeusingenginebrakingtocontrolthe
rateofdescent.
