Asfaraspossibleallowthevehicletosteer
itselfalongthebottomoftheruts.However,
alwayskeepalightholdofthesteeringwheel
topreventitfromspinningfree.

Checkthatthegroundisfirmandnot
slippery.
Particularlyinwetconditions,ifthesteering
wheelisallowedtospinfree,thevehiclemay
appeartobedrivingstraightaheadintheruts,
butinactualfact(duetothelackoftraction
causedbythewetground)isunknowinglyon
fullrightorleftlock.Then,whenlevelground
isreached,orifadrypatchisencountered,
thewheelswillfindtractionandcausethe
vehicletosuddenlyveertoleftorright.

Checkthatthewheelsonthedownhillside
ofthevehiclearenotlikelytodropinto
anydepressionsinthegroundandthatthe
’uphill’wheelswillnotrunoverrocks,tree
roots,orsimilarobstaclesthatcould
suddenlyincreasetheangleoftilt.

Ensurethatpassengerweightisevenly
distributed,thatallroofrackluggageis
removedandthatallotherluggageis
properlysecuredandstowedaslowas
possible.Alwaysremember;anysudden
movementoftheloadcouldcausethe
vehicletooverturn.
CROSSINGARIDGE
Approachatrightanglessothatbothfront
wheelsandthenbothrearwheelscrossthe
ridgetogether-anangledapproachcould
causetractiontobelost(ifTractioncontrolis
notfitted)throughdiagonallyoppositewheels
liftingfromthegroundatthesametime.
Rearseatpassengersshouldsitonthe
uphillsideofthevehicleor,inextreme
conditions,shouldvacatethevehicleuntil
theslopinggroundhasbeensafely
negotiated.
CROSSINGADITCH
WiththeDIFFLOCKengaged,crossditchesat
ananglesothatthreewheelsalwaysmaintain
contactwiththeground(ifapproachedhead
on,bothfrontwheelswilldropintotheditch
together,possiblyresultinginthechassisand
frontbumperbeingtrappedonoppositesides
oftheditch).

ofthegullywallscouldcausethesideofthe
vehicletobetrappedagainsttheopposite
gullywall.
