Highrangegearsshouldbeusedwhenever
possible-onlychangetolowrangewhen
groundconditionsbecomeverydifficult.The
DIFFLOCKshouldbeengagedwheneverthere
isariskoflosingwheelgrip,anddisengaged
assoonasfirm,level,non-slipperygroundis
reached.
Braking
Asfaraspossible,vehiclespeedshouldbe
controlledthroughcorrectgearselection.
Applicationofthebrakepedalshouldbekept
toanabsoluteminimum.UnlessABSisfitted,
anybrakingonwet,muddyorloosesurfaces
islikelytocauseoneormorewheelstolock-
theresultantslidecouldprovedangerous.
WARNING
DONOThold the steering wheel with your
thumbs inside the rim - a sudden ’kick’ of
the wheel as the vehicle negotiates a rut or
boulder could seriously injure them.
ALWAYS grip the wheel on the outside of the
rim (as shown) when traversing uneven
ground.
NOTE: If the correct gear has been selected,
braking will be largelyunnecessary.
Useofengineforbraking
Beforedescendingsteepslopes,stopthe
vehicleatleastalengthbeforethedescent,
selectneutralinthemaingearbox,engage
LOWrangeandthenselectfirstorsecond
geardependingontheseverityoftheincline.
Surveythegroundbeforedriving
Beforenegotiatingdifficultterrain,itiswiseto
carryoutapreliminarysurveyonfoot.This
willminimisetheriskofyourvehiclegetting
intodifficultythroughapreviouslyunnoticed
hazard.
Whiledescendingtheslopeitshouldbe
rememberedthattheenginewillprovide
sufficientbrakingefforttocontroltherateof
descent,andthatthebrakesshouldnotbe
applied.
Accelerating
Usetheacceleratorwithcare-unlessTraction
controlisfitted,anysuddensurgeofpower
mayinducewheelspinandresultinlossof
controlofthevehicle.
