Sulfur in Gasoline
CAUTIO N!
If you live in the Northeast United States, you r vehicle
may have been designed to meet California low emission
stand ard s with cleaner burning California reform ulated
gasoline with low sulfur. If such fuels are not available in
states adopting California emission stand ard s, you r ve-
hicle will operate satisfactorily on fuels meeting Federal
specifications, but emission control system perform ance
may be adversely affected .
If the Malfu nction Indicator Ligh t is flash ing, imme-
diate service is req uired . See the On Board Diagn os-
tics paragrap h in the Main ten ance section of this
manual.
Materials Added to Fuel
All gasoline sold in the United States is requ ired to 5
contain effective detergent additives. Use of additional
detergents or other additives is not need ed und er norm al
cond itions and would resu lt in additional cost. Therefore
you shou ld not have to add anything to the fuel.
Gasoline sold outsid e of California is perm itted to have
higher sulfur levels which may affect the perform ance of
the vehicle’s catalytic converter. This may cause the
Malfu nction Ind icator Light to illuminate. The manu fac-
turer recom mend s that you try a different brand of
unlead ed gasoline having lower sulfur to determ ine if the
problem is fuel related prior to retu rning you r vehicle to
an authorized dealer for service.
