ONLY the correct typ e therm ostat. Other designs may
resu lt in unsatisfactory cooling perform ance, poor gas
mileage, and increased emissions.
Brakes
In ord er to assu re brake system perform ance, all brake
system components shou ld be insp ected period ically.
Suggested service intervals can be found in section 8.
Hoses and Vacuum/Vapor Harnesses
Insp ect surfaces of hoses and nylon tubing for evid ence
of heat and mechanical damage. Hard or soft spots,
brittle rubber, cracking, checking, tears, cuts, abrasions,
and excessive swelling ind icate deterioration of the rub-
ber.
WARN ING!
Rid ing the brak es can lead to brak e failu re and
possib ly an accid ent. Drivin g with you r foot restin g
or rid ing on the brak e pedal can resu lt in abnorm ally
high brak e tem peratu res, excessive lin ing wear, and
possib le brak e damage. You may not have you r full
brak ing capacity in an emergen cy.
Pay particu lar attention to those hoses nearest to high
heat sou rces such as the exhau st manifold . Insp ect hose
rou ting to be sure hoses do not tou ch any heat sou rce or
moving component that may cause heat damage or
mechanical wear.

Brak e and Pow er Steerin g System Hoses
Insu re nylon tubing in these areas has not melted or
collap sed . Insp ect all hose connections such as clamps
and couplings to make sure they are secure and no leaks
are present. Com ponents shou ld be rep laced immedi-
ately if there is any evid ence of degrad ation that could
cause failu re.
When servicing the vehicle for sched uled maintenance,
insp ect surface of hoses and nylon tubing for evid ence of
heat and mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rubber,
cracking, checking, tears, cuts, abrasion, and excessive
swelling suggest deterioration of the rubber. Particu lar
attention shou ld be made to exam ining those hose sur-
faces nearest to high heat sou rces, such as the exhau st
manifold .
