WHAT TO DO IN EMERGENCIES
DRIVING ON SLIPPERY SURFACES
Traction
When driving on wet or slushy road s, it is possible for a
wedge of water to build up betw een the tire and road
surface. This is hyd rop laning and may cause partial or
complete loss of vehicle control and stop ping ability. To
red uce this possibility, the follow ing precau tions shou ld
be observed :
Acceleration
Rapid acceleration on snow covered , wet, or other slip-
pery surfaces may cause the front wheels to pull errati-
cally to the right or left. This phenom enon occurs when
there is a difference in the surface traction und er the front
(driving) wheels, particu larly with high output engines.
1.
Slow down during rainstorm s or when road s are
slushy.
WARN ING!
2.
Slow down if road has stand ing water or puddles.
Rap id acceleration on slip pery surfaces is danger-
ous. Unequal traction can cause sudden pullin g of
the fron t wheels. You could lose control of the
veh icle and possib ly have an accid ent. Accelerate
slow ly and carefu lly whenever there is lik ely to be
poor traction (ice, snow, wet, mud, loose san d, etc.).
3. Replace tires when tread wear ind icators first becom e
visible.
4.
Keep tires prop erly inflated .
5. Maintain enou gh distance betw een you r vehicle and
the vehicle in front of you to avoid a collision in a sudden
stop .
NOTE: If so equ ipped, turn on the Traction Control
System to accelerate on slippery surfaces.
