UNDERSTANDING YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL
If the light comes on and rem ains on while driving, stop
the vehicle and shu t off the engine. Do not operate the
vehicle until the cause is corrected .
WARN ING!
Drivin g a veh icle with the brak e ligh t on is danger-
ous. A sign ifican t decrease in brak ing perform ance
may occur. It will tak e you lon ger to stop the veh icle.
You could have an accid ent. Have the veh icle
checked immediately.
The light does not show the quantity of oil in the engine.
This can be determ ined using the proced ure show n in
Section 7.

Brake Syst em Warning Light
This light monitors both the brake fluid level
and the parking brake. If the light comes on,
it ind icates either that the parking brake is
on or there is a low fluid level in the brake
master cylind er. On vehicles equ ipped with Anti-lock
brakes (ABS), the brake light may also ind icate re-
duced braking perform ance.
The warning light shou ld be checked frequ ently to assu re
that it is operating prop erly. Turn the ignition key to the
RUN position. (Refer to “A Word Abou t Your Keys,
Ignition Key Removal” in this manu al for an illustration
of the ignition positions.) The light shou ld come on. If the
light does not come on, have the system checked by an
authorized dealer.
If the parking brake is off and the light rem ains on, have
the brake system insp ected as soon as possible.
The light will also come on when the parking brake is
applied with the ignition in the RUN position.
NOTE: This light show s only that the parking brake is
on. It does not show the degree of brake application.
