STARTING AND OPERATING
“3” Drive
NOTE:    The vehicle  computer   will  over  rid e Overd rive
and   “3”  Drive  ranges   by  changing   shift   points   if the
transm ission   operating   tem peratu re  exceed s accep table
limits.  This is done  to  prevent  transm  ission damage   due
to overheating.
This range  eliminates  shifts into  Overd rive. The transm  is-
sion  will  operate   norm ally  in  First,  Second   and  Third
while  in this  range. The  “3” position  shou ld  also be used
when  descend  ing steep  grad es  to  prevent  brake  system
distress.
ALL WHEEL DRIVE — IF EQUIPPED
NOTE:   Using  the  “3” range  while  operating  the  vehicle
und er  heavy  operating   cond itions  will  improve   perfor-
mance  and  extend   transm ission  life  by  red ucing  exces-
sive  shifting  and  heat  build  up.
This  featu re provid  es full  time,   on-d emand , All  Wheel
Drive  (AWD).  The  system  is  autom atic  with   no  driver
inp uts or  additional   driving   skills  requ ired . Und er nor-
mal driving   cond itions, the  front  wheels  provid e most  of
the  traction.   If the   front  wheels  begin   to  lose  traction,
power   is shifted   autom atically  to  the  rear   wheels.  The
greater   the   front  wheel   traction   loss,   the  greater    the
power  transfer   to the  rear  wheels.
“L” Low
This  range   shou ld  be   used  for   engine   braking   when
descend ing  very steep  grad es. In this  range,  upshifts  will
occur only  to prevent  engine  oversp eed while  downshifts
occur  earlier  than  other  gear  range  selections.
