Proced ure For Checking Fluid Level
5. Remove the dipstick and determ ine if the fluid is hot
or warm . Hot fluid is approxim ately 180°F (82°C), which
is the norm al operating tem peratu re after the vehicle has
been driven at least 15 miles (24 km). The fluid cannot be
comfortably held betw een the finger tips. Cold is when
the fluid is below 27°C (80°F).
The fluid level in the autom atic transm ission shou ld be
checked whenever the vehicle is serviced . Operation with
an improp er fluid level will greatly red uce the life of the
transm ission and of the fluid.
To prop erly check the autom atic transm ission fluid level,
the follow ing proced ure must be used :
6. Wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert until seated .
Remove dipstick and note read ing.

The vehicle must be on level grou nd .
a. If the fluid is hot, the read ing shou ld be in the
crosshatched area marked “HOT” (betw een the upper
two holes in the dipstick).

Fully apply parking brake.
b. If the fluid is cold, the fluid level shou ld be betw een
the lower two holes in the area marked “COLD”.

Place the gear selector momentarily in each gear
position end ing with the lever in P (PARK). Wipe the area
arou nd the dipstick clean to eliminate the possibility of
dirt entering the transm ission.
If the fluid level ind icates low, add sufficient fluid to
bring to the prop er level.
