muchfasterwithalotofheavy
braking. Keepingpacewiththe
trafficandallowing realistic following
distances eliminates alotof
helptocontrolthevehiclewhile
driving —brakes,steering, and
accelerator.Attimes,aswhen
drivingonsnoworice,itiseasyto
askmoreofthosecontrolsystems
thanthetiresandroadcanprovide.

Averagereactiontimeisabout
three‐fourthsofasecond.Butthatis
onlyanaverage. Itmightbeless
withonedriverandaslongastwo
orthreesecondsormorewith
another.Age,physical condition,
alertness, coordination, and
eyesight allplayapart.Sodo
alcohol, drugs,andfrustration. But
eveninthree‐fourthsofasecond,a
vehiclemovingat100km/h
unnecessary braking. Thatmeans
betterbrakingandlongerbrakelife.
