converter   into  the  transm ission.  This  is consid ered   a
norm al  cond ition  and  will  not  cause  damage   to  the
transm ission.  The torqu e  converter  will  refill within   5
second s of  shifting  from  P (Park)  into  any  other  gear
position.
A featu re  designed   to  improve   fuel  econom y has  been
added   to  the  autom atic  transm ission  of  this  vehicle.  A
clutch  within  the torqu e converter  engages   autom atically
at calibrated   speed s. This  may  resu lt in a  slightly  differ-
ent  feeling or  resp onse during   norm al operation   in  high
gear.  When  the  vehicle  speed  drop s or  during   accelera-
tion,  the clutch  autom  atically and  smoothly   disengages.

The  transm ission  is monitored   for  abnorm al  cond itions.
If a  cond ition  is detected   that  could  cause  damage,   the
transm ission  autom  atically  shifts  into  second   gear.  The
transm ission  rem ains in second  gear  despite  the  forw ard
gear  selected . Park (P), Reverse  (R), and  Neutral   (N) will
continu e to operate.   This Reset featu re allow s the  vehicle
to be driven  to  a dealer  for service  withou t damaging   the
transm ission.
NOTE:
The torqu  e converter  clutch  will  not  engage  until  the
transm ission  fluid  and   engine  coolant  is  warm  (usu-
ally  after  13 miles  (1.64.8 km)  of  driving).  Because
engine   speed   is  higher   when   the  torqu e  converter
clutch  is not  engaged , it  may  seem as  if the  transm is-
sion is not  shifting  into Overd rive”  when  cold. This is
consid ered  a norm al cond ition.  Pulling  the  shift  lever
into the  3position  will show  that  the transm  ission is
able  to shift  into and  out  of  Overd rive.
If the problem  has  been momentary,   the transm  ission can
be reset  to  regain  all forw ard  gears.
•  Stop the  vehicle  and  shift  into PARK  (P).
•  Turn  the key  to LOCK  then  start  the  engine.
If the vehicle  has  not been  driven  for several  days,  the
first  few second s of  operation  after  shifting  the  trans-
mission  into gear  may seem  sluggish.  This is due to the
transm ission  fluid  partially   draining   from  the  torqu e
Shift into  D”  and  resu me driving.
