Tighten the gas cap until you hear a “clicking ” sou nd .
This is an ind ication that the gas cap is prop erly
tightened . If the gas cap is not secured prop erly the
Malfu nction Ind icator Light in the instru ment cluster
will turn on. Make sure that the gas cap is tightened
each time the vehicle is refu eled .

The volatility of some gasolines may cause a
buildup of pressure in the fuel tank that may
increasewhileyoudrive.Thispressurecanresult
inasprayofgasolineand/orvaporswhenthecap 5
isremovedfromahotvehicle.Removingthecap
slowly allows the pressure to vent and prevents
fuelspray.

When the fuel nozzle “clicks” or shu ts off, the fuel
tank is full.

If the vehicle diagnostic system determ ines that the fuel
filler cap is loose, improp erly installed , or damaged , a

Never have any smoking materials lit in or near
the vehicle when the gas cap is removed or the
tankfilled.

Check Gascap ” message will display in the Electronic
Vehicle Inform ation Center (EVIC) — if equ ipped. Refer
to “Electronic Vehicle Inform ation Center (EVIC)” in
Section 4 of this manu al. Tighten the fuel filler cap
prop erly and press the odometer reset button to turn the
message off. If the problem continu es, the message will
appear the next time the vehicle is started . Refer to
Neveraddfueltothevehiclewhentheengineis
running.
