If there is a need to restart you r engine be sure to cycle
the key to the LOCK position before restarting. Trans-
mission engagem ent may be delayed up to 10 second s
after restart if the key is not cycled to the LOCK
position first.
The selector lever is autom atically locked while in the
PARK position. To move the selector lever out of the
PARK position, the brake pedal must be firm ly depressed
before the shift lock will release.
Shift the selector lever to the desired position only when
the engine is idling norm ally and the brake pedal is
applied. Do not release the brake until read y to drive. The
vehicle may otherw ise accelerate quickly when the selec-
tor lever is in DRIVE or REVERSE position.
The electronically controlled transm ission provid es a
precise shift sched ule. The transm ission electronics are
self-calibrating. Therefore, the first few shifts on a new
vehicle may be som ewhat abru pt or soft until after the
break-in period . This is a norm al cond ition, and pre-
cision shifts will develop within a few shift cycles.

the vehicle with the brake pedal. For longer stop s with
the engine idling, shift into the NEUTRAL or PARK
position and hold the vehicle with the parking brake.
When stop ping the vehicle uphill, do not hold it with the
accelerator; use the brake. This avoid s unnecessary trans-
mission heat build-up.
