THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR  VEHICLE
41
Along  with   the  seat  belts,  front  airbags   work  with  the
instru ment   panel   knee   bolsters   to   provid e  improved
protection   for the  driver   and  front  passenger.  Side  Cur-
tain  Airbags  also  work  with  seat  belts to  improve   occu-
pant  protection.
Here are some simple steps you can take to minimize
theriskofharmfromadeployingairbag.
1.
Child ren 12 years  old  and  und er shou ld  rid e buckled 2
up  in the  rear  seat. Infants   in rear-facing  child  restraints
shou ld NEVER rid e in the front  seat  of a  vehicle  with  a
passenger    front  airbag.   An   airbag   deploym  ent  could
cause  severe  injury  or death   to infants  in  that  position.
The seat  belts are  designed   to protect  you  in many  typ es
of  collisions.  The  front   airbags   deploy  in  moderate    to
severe  frontal  collisions.
Child ren that  are not  big enou gh to  wear  the vehicle  seat
belt  prop erly (refer  to  inform ation  on Child  Restraint   in
this  section)  shou ld  be secured   in the  rear  seat  in  child
restraints   or belt-p ositioning  booster   seats.
NOTE:
The  passenger    front  airbag   may   not  deploy
even  when   the  driver  front  airbag   has  if the  Occupant
Classification   System  (refer  to inform ation  on  Occupant
Classification  System  in  this section)  has  determ ined  the
passenger  seat  is empty  or is occupied  by som eone that  is
classified  in  the Љsmall childЉ   category.
Old er child ren  who  do  not  use  child  restraints   or  belt-
positioning   booster   seats  shou ld  rid e prop erly  buckled
up  in  the  rear   seat.  Never   allow  child ren  to  slide  the
shou lder  belt behind   them  or und er  their  arm .
If you r vehicle is so equ ipped,  the Side Curtain  Airbag  on
the  crash  side  of the  vehicle  is triggered   in moderate   to
severe  side  collisions.   But  even  in  collisions  where   the
airbags  work,  you  need  the seat  belts  to keep  you  in the
right  position  for  the  airbags  to protect  you  prop erly.
If a  child  from  1 to  12 years  old  must   rid e in the  front
passenger   seat becau se the  vehicle  is crow ded, move  the
seat  as  far  back  as  possible,   and  use  the   prop er  child
restraint   (refer to  inform ation  on  Child  Restraint  in  this
section).
