STARTING AND OPERATING
Torque Con verter Clu tch
Operating Instructions/Precautions
A featu re designed to improve fuel econom y has been
added to the autom atic transm ission of this vehicle. A
clutch within the torqu e converter engages autom atically
at calibrated speed s. This may resu lt in a slightly differ-
ent feeling or resp onse during norm al operation in high
gear. When the vehicle speed drop s or during accelera-
tion, the clutch autom atically and smoothly disengages.
The transfer case provid es four mode positions — two
(rear) wheel drive high range, four wheel drive high
range, neu tral, and four wheel drive low range.
This transfer case is intend ed to be driven in the two
wheel drive (2H) position for norm al street and highw ay
cond itions such as dry hard surfaced road s.
In the events when additional traction is requ ired , the
transfer case 4H and 4L positions can be used to lock the
front and rear driveshafts together and force the front
and rear wheels to rotate at the sam e speed . This is
accom plished by simply moving the shift lever to these
positions. The 4H and 4L positions are intend ed for loose,
slippery road surfaces only. Driving in the 4H and 4L
positions on dry hard surfaced road s may cause in-
creased tire wear and damage to the driveline compo-
nents.
FOUR–WHEEL DRIVE OPERATION
(COMMAND-TRAC™ OR ROCK-TRAC™) — IF
EQUIPPED
The 4WD ind icator light, located in the instru ment panel,
alerts the driver that the vehicle is in four wheel drive
and that the front and rear driveshafts are locked to-
gether. This light illuminates when the transfer case is
shifted to either the 4H or 4L positions.
