THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING  YOUR VEHICLE

Airbags  inflate  in moderate  to high  speed  impacts.  Along
with  the  seat  belts,  front  airbags   work  with  the  instru -
ment  panel  knee bolsters  to provid  e improved  protection
for the  driver  and  front  passenger.
Child ren  that  are  not  big  enou gh to  prop erly  wear  the
vehicle   seat   belt  (Refer   to   “Child   Restraint”    in  this
section.)  shou ld  be  secured   in  the  rear  seat,  in  a  child
restraint   or belt-p ositioning   booster  seat.  Old er child ren
who   do   not   use   child   restraints    or   belt-p ositioning
booster  seats  shou ld rid e prop erly buckled  up  in the rear
seat.  Never   allow   child ren  to  slide   the   shou lder  belt
behind  them  or  und er their  arm .

The seat  belts  are designed   to protect  you  in many  typ es
of  collisions.  The  front   airbags   deploy  in  moderate    to
severe  frontal  collisions.  But even  in collisions  where  the
airbags  work,  you  need  the seat  belts  to keep  you  in the
right  position  for  the  airbags  to protect  you  prop erly.
If a  child  from  1 to  12 years  old  must   rid e in the  front
passenger   seat becau se the  vehicle  is crow ded, move  the
seat  as  far  back  as  possible,   and  use  the   prop er  child
restraint.  Refer  to “Child   Restraint”  in  this section.
Here  are som e simple step s you  can take  to minim ize the
risk  of harm  from  a deploying   airbag.

child restraint   to make sure  that you  are using  it prop erly.
Infants  in  rear-facing  child  restraints   (designed   for  chil-
dren  up to  20 lbs (9 kg) and  at least  one year  old)  shou ld
NEVER  rid e in the front  seat  of a vehicle  with  a passen-
ger front  airbag,  unless the  airbag  is turned  off. An airbag
deploym ent  can cause  severe injury  or death  to  infants  in
this  position.
