When the vehicle is new, the compass shou ld initially be
verified for correct compass variance (refer to Com pass
Variation Adjustm ent) and calibrated manu ally (refer to
Manu al Calibration). This will ensu re correct initial cali-
bration and eliminate initial erroneou s compass head -
ings.

off and the compass will function norm ally.
Com pass Variation Adjustm ent
Com pass Variance is the difference betw een magnetic
north and geograp hic north. In som e areas of the country,
the difference betw een magnetic and geograp hic north is
great enou gh to cause the compass to give false read ings.
If this occurs, the compass variance must be set accord ing
to the Com pass Variance Map .
Manual Calib ration
If the compass appears erratic and CAL does not appear,
you must manu ally put the compass into the calibration
mode. To ensu re prop er compass calibration, make sure
the compass variance is prop erly set before manu ally
calibrating the compass (refer to Com pass Variation
Adjustm ent).
NOTE: When the mirror is in the VAR mode, the letter
āZā will be displayed along with the currently selected
zone nu mber.
To put the compass into calibration mode: Turn the
ignition to the ON position. Press and hold the center
button for more than 6 second s until CAL (calibration
mode) appears in the display. To change the display
betw een VAR (compass variance) and CAL (compass
calibration) modes. Release the button to invoke manu al
calibration mode. To recalibrate the compass, drive the
vehicle at less than 5 mph (8 km/ h) throu gh up to CAL
shou ld display for a complete 11ā2 360Ā° turns in an area
