STARTING AND OPERATING
WARN ING!
WARN ING!
To use you r brak es and decelerate more safely, follow these
tip s:
The weigh t and position of cargo and passen gers can
change the veh icle center of gravity and veh icle han-
dlin g. To avoid loss of control resu ltin g in person al
injury, follow these guidelin es:
•
Do not “rid e” the brak es by restin g you r foot on the pedal.
This could overh eat the brak es and resu lt in unpred ictab le
brak ing action , lon ger stop ping distan ces, or brak e damage.
• Alw ays place cargo even ly on the cargo floor, and
locate heavier objects as low and as far forw ard as
possib le.
•
When descen ding mountain s or hills, rep eated brak ing can
cause brak e fad e with loss of brak ing control. Avoid
rep eated heavy brak ing by downshiftin g the tran smission
whenever possib le.
•
Place as much cargo as possib le in fron t of the rear
axle. Too much weigh t or improp erly placed weigh t
over or behind the rear axle can cause the rear of the
veh icle to sway.
•
•
Do not downshift on icy or slip pery road s, becau se engin e
brak ing may cause skidding and loss of control.
Engin es may idle at high er speed s durin g warm -up, which
could cause rear wheels to spin and resu lt in loss of veh icle
control. Be esp ecially carefu l while drivin g on slip pery
road s, in close-q uarter maneuverin g, park ing or stop ping.
Rem ember, alw ays engage 4-wheel drive when drivin g on
slip pery road s.

•
•
The rear cargo space is inten ded for load carryin g
purposes only, not for passen gers, who should sit in
seats and use seat belts.
•
•
Do not drive too fast for road condition s, esp ecially when
road s are wet or slu shy. A wedge of water can build up
betw een the tire tread and the road . This hydrop lan ing
On hard top models, do not drive with the lift glass
up. On fab ric top models, do not drive with the rear
window curtain up unless the sid e curtain s are also
open. This will preven t dangerou s exhaust fumes
from enterin g the veh icle.

can cause loss of traction , brak ing ability, and
control. Under such condition s, engage 4-wheel drive.
After goin g throu gh deep water or a car wash , brak es may
becom e wet, resu ltin g in poor perform ance and unpred ict-
able brak ing action . Dry the brak es by gen tle, interm itten t
pedal action while drivin g at very slow speed s.
