LATCH — Child Seat Anchorage System (Lower
Anchors and Tether for CH ild ren )
The two rear outboard seating positions have lower
anchorages that are capable of accom modating LATCH-
compatible child seats having flexible, webbing-m ounted
lower attachm ents. Child seats with fixed lower attach- 2
ments must be installed in the outboard positions only.
Regard less of the specific typ e of lower attachm ent,
NEVER install LATCH-compatible child seats such that
two seats share a common lower anchorage. If installing
child seats in adjacent rear-seating positions or if you r
child restraints are not LATCH-compatible, install the
restraints using the vehicle’s seat belts.
Your vehicle’s front passenger and two rear outboard (if
equ ipped) seating positions are equ ipped with the child
restraint anchorage system called LATCH. The LATCH
system provid es for the installation of the child restraint
withou t using the vehicle’s seat belts, instead securing
the child restraint using lower anchorages and upper
tether strap s from the child restraint to the vehicle
stru cture.
LATCH-compatible child restraint system s are now avail-
able. However, becau se the lower anchorages are to be
introd uced over a period of years, child restraint system s
having attachm ents for those anchorages will continu e to
also have featu res for installation using the vehicle’s seat
belts. Child restraints having tether strap s and hooks for
connection to the top tether anchorages have been avail-
able for som e time. For som e older child restraints, many
child restraint manu factu rers offer add-on tether strap
kits or retro-fit kits. You are urged to take advantage of all
the available attachm ents provid ed with you r child re-
straint in any vehicle.
