Also, the ACM turns on the “Airbag Warning Light” in
the instru ment panel for 6 to 8 second s when the
ignition is first turned on, then turns the light off. If it
detects a malfunction in any part of the system , it turns
on the light either momentarily or continu ously. If the
ACM detects a malfunction, the “Airbag Warning
Light” will illuminate for a minim um of 12 second s
and will rem ain illuminated as long as the malfunction
exists.

instru ment panel. When the ACM detects a collision
requ iring the airbags, it signals the inflator units. A 2
large quantity of nontoxic gas is generated to inflate
the airbags. The airbag covers separate and fold out of
the way as the bags inflate to full size. The bags fully
inflate in abou t 50 millisecond s. This is abou t half of
the time it takes to blink you r eyes. The airbags then
quickly deflate while help ing to restrain the driver and
front passenger. The driver’s front airbag gas is vented
throu gh the airbag material tow ard s the instru ment
panel. The passenger’s front airbag gas is vented
throu gh vent holes in the sides of the airbag. In this
way the airbags do not interfere with you r control of
the vehicle.
WARN ING!
Ign orin g the “Airb ag Warn ing Ligh t” in you r instru -
ment panel could mean you won’t have the airb ags
to protect you in a collision . If the ligh t does not
come on, stays on after you start the veh icle, or if it
comes on as you drive, have the airb ag system
checked righ t away.
