STARTING AND OPERATING
299
When frequ ent transaxle shifting occurs while using the
DRIVE/ OVERDRIVE range, such as when operating the
vehicle und er heavy load ing cond itions (in hilly terrain,
traveling into strong head wind s, or while tow ing trail-
ers), use the [3] range.
[1] Low
This range shou ld be used for maxim um engine braking
when descend ing steep grad es. In this range, up shifts
will occur only to prevent engine over speed while down
shifts from [2] to [1] will occur as early as possible.

DRIVE
AUTOSTICK — IF EQUIPPED
This range eliminates shifts into OVERDRIVE. The trans-
axle will operate norm ally in first and second while in
this range.
AUTOSTICK is a driver-interactive transm ission that
offers manu al gear shifting capability to provid e you
with more control. AUTOSTICK allow s you to maxim ize 5
engine braking, eliminate und esirable upshifts and
downshifts, and improve overall vehicle perform ance.
This system can also provid e you with more control
during passing, city driving, cold slippery cond itions,
mountain driving, trailer tow ing, and many other situ a-
tions.
NOTE: Using the [3] range while operating the vehicle
und er heavy operating cond itions will improve perfor-
mance, fuel econom y, and extend transaxle life by red uc-
ing excessive shifting and heat build up.
Use the [3] range when descend ing steep grad es to
prevent brake system distress.
