Avoidneedless heavybraking. Somepeopledrivein
spurts,heavyacceleration followed byheavybraking,
ratherthankeepingpacewithtraffic.Thisisamistake.
Thebrakesmightnothavetimetocoolbetweenhard
stops.Thebrakeswillwearoutmuchfasterwithalotof
heavybraking. Keepingpacewiththetrafficand
allowing realistic following distances eliminates alotof
unnecessary braking. Thatmeansbetterbrakingand
longerbrakelife.

Averagereactiontimeisaboutthree‐fourthsofa
second.Butthatisonlyanaverage.Itmightbeless
withonedriverandaslongastwoorthreesecondsor
morewithanother.Age,physical condition, alertness,
coordination, andeyesight allplayapart.Sodoalcohol,
drugs,andfrustration. Buteveninthree‐fourthsofa
second,avehiclemovingat100km/h(60mph)travels
Iftheengineeverstopswhilethevehicleisbeing
driven,brakenormally butdonotpumpthebrakes.
Ifthebrakesarepumped,thepedalcouldgetharderto
pushdown.Iftheenginestops,therewillstillbesome
powerbrakeassistbutitwillbeusedwhenthebrakeis
applied. Oncethepowerassistisusedup,itcantake
longertostopandthebrakepedalwillbeharder
topush.
