Therearetimeswhensteering canbemoreeffective
thanbraking. Forexample, youcomeoverahilland
findatruckstoppedinyourlane,oracarsuddenly pulls
outfromnowhere, orachilddartsoutfrombetween
parkedcarsandstopsrightinfrontofyou.These
problems canbeavoidedbybraking—ifyoucanstop
intime.Butsometimes youcannotstopintime
becausethereisnoroom.Thatisthetimeforevasive
action—steering aroundtheproblem.
PowerSteering
Ifpowersteering assistislostbecausetheenginestops
orthesystemisnotfunctioning, thevehiclecanbe
steeredbutitwilltakemoreeffort.
SteeringTips
Itisimportant totakecurvesatareasonable speed.
Tractioninacurvedependsonthecondition ofthetires
andtheroadsurface, theangleatwhichthecurveis
banked,andvehiclespeed.Whileinacurve,speedis
theonefactorthatcanbecontrolled.
Thevehiclecanperformverywellinemergencies
likethese.Firstapplythebrakes.SeeBraking on
page 6‑4.Itisbettertoremoveasmuchspeedas
possible fromacollision. Thensteeraroundthe
problem, totheleftorrightdepending onthe
spaceavailable.
Ifthereisaneedtoreducespeed,doitbefore
entering thecurve,whilethefrontwheelsarestraight.
Trytoadjustthespeedsoyoucandrivethroughthe
curve.Maintainareasonable, steadyspeed.Waitto
accelerate untiloutofthecurve,andthenaccelerate
gentlyintothestraightaway.
