assparkknock,mightbeheard.Iftheoctaneisless
than87,youmightnoticeaheavyknocking noise
whenyoudrive.Ifthisoccurs,useagasoline rated
at87octaneorhigherassoonaspossible. Otherwise,
youcoulddamagetheengine.Ifheavyknocking is
heardwhenusinggasoline ratedat87octaneorhigher,
theengineneedsservice.
Ifthevehicleiscertified tomeetCalifornia Emissions
Standards, itisdesigned tooperateonfuelsthatmeet
California specifications. Seetheunderhood emission
controllabel.Ifthisfuelisnotavailable instates
adopting California emissions standards, thevehicle
willoperatesatisfactorily onfuelsmeetingfederal
specifications, butemissioncontrolsystemperformance
mightbeaffected.Themalfunction indicator lampcould
turnonandthevehiclemightfailasmog‐checktest.

occurs,returntoyourauthorized dealer/retailer for
diagnosis. Ifitisdetermined thatthecondition iscaused

GasolineSpecifications
Ataminimum,gasoline shouldmeetASTM
specification D4814intheUnitedStatesor
CAN/CGSB‐3.5or3.511inCanada.Some
gasolines containanoctane-enhancing additive called
methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
Werecommend againsttheuseofgasolines containing
MMT.SeeAdditives on page 7‑7 foradditional
information.
Additives
Toprovidecleanerair,allgasolines intheUnitedStates
arenowrequired tocontainadditives thathelpprevent
engineandfuelsystemdeposits fromforming, allowing
theemissioncontrolsystemtoworkproperly.Inmost
cases,nothingshouldhavetobeaddedtothefuel.
However,somegasolines containonlytheminimum
amountofadditive required tomeetU.S.Environmental
Protection Agencyregulations. Tohelpkeepfuel
