dunes,thetireswilltendtosinkintothesand.This
affectssteering, accelerating, andbraking. Driveata
reducedspeedandavoidsharpturnsorabrupt
maneuvers.

Gettingoutonthedownhill(low)sideofavehicle
stoppedacrossanincline isdangerous. Ifthe
vehiclerollsover,youcouldbecrushedorkilled.
Alwaysgetoutontheuphill(high)sideofthe
vehicleandstaywellclearoftherollover path.
Hardpackedsnowandiceoffertheworsttiretraction.
Onthesesurfaces, itisveryeasytolosecontrol. On
wetice,forexample, thetraction issopoorthatyouwill
havedifficulty accelerating. And,ifthevehicledoesget
moving,poorsteering anddifficult brakingcancauseit
toslideoutofcontrol.
Ifthevehiclestallswhencrossing anincline, besure
you,andanypassengers, getoutontheuphillside,
evenifthedoorthereishardertoopen.Ifyougetout
onthedownhill sideandthevehiclestartstorollover,
youwillberightinitspath.

dangerous. Underwater springs,currents under
theice,orsuddenthawscanweakentheice.Your
vehiclecouldfallthroughtheiceandyouandyour

DrivinginMud,Sand,Snow,orIce
Whenyoudriveinmud,snow,orsand,thewheelsdo
notgetgoodtraction. Acceleration isnotasquick,
turningismoredifficult, andbrakingdistances
arelonger.
Itisbesttousealowgearwheninmud—thedeeper
themud,thelowerthegear.Inreallydeepmud,keep
thevehiclemovingsoitdoesnotgetstuck.
