WeightoftheTraileringCombination
Itisimportant thatthecombination ofthetow
vehicleandtrailerdoesnotexceedanyofitsweight
ratings—GCWR,GVWR,RGAWR,TrailerWeight
RatingorTongueWeight.Theonlywaytobesureitis
notexceeding anyoftheseratingsistoweighthetow
vehicleandtrailercombination, fullyloadedforthetrip,
gettingindividual weightsforeachoftheseitems.
Afterloadingthetrailer,weighthetrailerandthenthe
tongue,separately,toseeiftheweightsareproper.
Iftheyarenot,adjustments mightbemadebymoving
someitemsaroundinthetrailer.
Hitches
TotalWeightontheVehicle'sTires
Thecorrect hitchequipment helpsmaintaincombination
control. Mostsmall-to-medium trailers canbetowed
withaweightcarrying hitchwhichsimplyfeatures a
couplerlatchedtothehitchball.Largertrailersmay
requireaweightdistributing hitchthatusesspringbars
todistribute thetrailertongueweightamongthe
twovehicleandtraileraxles.See“WeightoftheTrailer
Tongue”earlierinthissectionforratinglimitswith
varioushitchtypes.
Besurethevehicle's tiresareinflated totheinflation
pressures foundontheCertification labelonthedriver
doororseeLoadingtheVehicle on page 6‑32 formore
information. MakesurenottoexceedtheGVWRlimit
forthevehicle, ortheRGAWR,withthetowvehicleand
trailerfullyloadedforthetripincluding theweightofthe
trailertongue.Ifusingaweightdistributing hitch,make
surenottoexceedtheRGAWRbeforeapplying the
weightdistribution springbars.
Ifastep-bumper hitchwillbeused,thebumpercould
bedamagedinsharpturns.Makesurethereisample
roomwhenturningtoavoidcontactbetweenthetrailer
andthebumper.
