Thetreadwear gradeisacomparative rating
basedonthewearrateofthetirewhentested
undercontrolled conditions onaspecified
government testcourse. Forexample, atire
graded150wouldwearoneandahalf(1.5)times
aswellonthegovernment courseasatire
graded100.Therelative performance oftires
dependsupontheactualconditions oftheiruse,
however,andmaydepartsignificantly fromthe
normduetovariations indriving habits,service
practices, anddifferences inroadcharacteristics
andclimate.

developed bytheUnitedStatesNational Highway
TrafficSafetyAdministration (NHTSA), which
gradestiresbytreadwear,traction, and
temperature performance. Thisapplies onlyto
vehicles soldintheUnitedStates. Thegradesare
moldedonthesidewalls ofmostpassenger car
tires.TheUniform TireQuality Grading (UTQG)
systemdoesnotapplytodeeptread,winter-type
snowtires,space-saver,ortemporary usespare
tires,tireswithnominalrimdiameters of
Traction–AA,A,B,C
Thetraction grades,fromhighest tolowest, are
AA,A,B,andC.Thosegradesrepresent the
tire'sabilitytostoponwetpavement asmeasured
undercontrolled conditions onspecified
government testsurfaces ofasphalt andconcrete.
AtiremarkedCmayhavepoortraction
performance.
