If tem peratu res are below 32°F (0°C), operate the engine
at moderate speed s for 5 minu tes before full load s are
applied.
for several secon ds. This assu res prop er lubrication of
the turbocharger. This is particu larly necessary after
any period of hard drivin g.
Engin e Idlin g - In Cold Weath er
Avoid prolonged idling in ambient tem peratu res below
Idle the engine a few minu tes before rou tine shu tdown.
After full load operation, idle the engine 3 to 5 minu tes
before shu tting it down. This idle period will allow the
lubricating oil and coolant to carry excess heat away from
the combustion cham ber, bearings, internal components,
and turbocharger. This is especially important for turbo- 5
charged , charge air cooled engines.

(-18°C). Long period s of idling may be harm ful to
you r engine becau se combustion cham ber tem peratu res
can drop so low that the fuel may not burn completely.
Incom plete combustion allow s carbon and varnish to
form on piston rings and injector nozzles. Also, the
unbu rned fuel can enter the crankcase, diluting the oil
and causing rap id wear to the engine.
The follow ing chart shou ld be used as a guide in deter-
mining the amount of engine idle time requ ired to
sufficiently cool down the turbocharger before shu t
down, depend ing upon the typ e of driving and the
amount of cargo.
