How The Airb ag System Work s
Also, the ORC turns on the “Airbag Warning
Light” for 2.5 to 8 second s for a self-check
when the ignition is first turned on. After the
self-check, the “Airbag Warning Light” will 2
turn off. If the ORC detects a malfunction in any part
of the system , it turns on the “Airbag Warning Light”
either momentarily or continu ously. A single chim e
will sou nd if the light comes on again after initial start
up.
•
The Occupant Restrain t Con trol (ORC) Module de-
term ines if a frontal, side, or rollover collision is severe
enou gh to requ ire the front and / or side airbags to
inflate. The front airbag inflators are designed to
provid e different rates of airbag inflation from direc-
tion provid ed by the ORC. The ORC will detect roll
overs, not rear impacts.
The ORC also monitors the read iness of the electronic
parts of the system whenever the ignition switch is in
the START or ON positions. These inclu de all of the
item s listed above excep t the knee bolster, the instru -
ment panel, and the steering wheel and column. If the
key is in the LOCK position, in the ACC position, or
not in the ignition, the airbags are not on and will not
inflate.
WARN ING!
Ign orin g the “Airb ag Warn ing Ligh t” in you r instru -
ment panel could mean you won’t have the airb ags to
protect you in a collision . If the ligh t does not come
on, stays on after you start the veh icle, or if it comes
on as you drive, have the airb ag system checked righ t
away.
